CNIGA Statement on State of the State Address
January 25, 2018
Sacramento, CA—Statement from Steve Stallings, Chairman, California Nations Indian Gaming Association:
The California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) applauds Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr. on his final State of the State speech. CNIGA shares the governor’s vision of expanding California’s economy as well as investing in infrastructure. In the speech, Gov. Brown said, ’Government does what individuals can't do, like build roads and bridges…’
We could not agree more.
For decades tribal governments struggled to provide basic infrastructure for our people. Now, due to revenues generated by tribal government gaming, tribes are not just building roads on our reservations, we are building solar farms, micro grids, water and sewer treatment plants and many other cutting edge infrastructure projects. In addition, gaming revenues are used to provide educational opportunities, healthcare and other critical governmental functions. These improvements have transformed tribal reservations as well as our surrounding communities in a way that allows our communities to not only simply function but also prosper. We are proud of our contributions to this great state, and we look forward to continuing our government-to-government relationship with the state of California.
The California Nations Indian Gaming Association is a non-profit association comprised of 34 federally recognized tribal governments dedicated to the protection of tribal sovereignty and the inherent right of tribes to have gaming on Indian lands.
